Our history
The Islamic Cultural Centre in Lund began in late 1979 / 1399 AH as an initiative by international students at Lund University. At the time there was no mosque at all in the city, and the number of Muslims in Lund was very small. In those early years, they prayed in a borrowed apartment.
A family of local Muslims lent their apartment, and this is where the first Muslims of Lund prayed — only a handful at the time. Through the 1990s the community grew. By 1996 the need for a larger gathering place led to a basement venue near Parantesen in central Lund, which served as a mosque. More Muslims found their way there, and for the first time Lund felt like it had a “real” mosque. Activity picked up significantly.
Through the 2000s the foundation was laid for a great deal of activity — lectures, khutbahs and a wide range of events. The community outgrew the basement, especially as a second generation of Muslims came of age.
The community longed for something larger — no longer underground, but a proper mosque visible above the street.
In 2009, the current building was purchased, a profound change from the previous space. The Muslims of Lund now had an entire building of their own — two storeys, with its own parking, in central Lund. History was written and a vital foothold for Muslims in Lund was established. Larger projects became possible and there was more room. Well-known imams have visited and preached in the mosque, and many historic events have taken place here. Students from the Islamic University of Madinah have visited twice, drawing more people to the mosque and helping guide several to Allah's path — the straight path.
